Maine
has 39 acute care and specialty hospitals, ranging in size and location.
Most of Maine's hospitals are private nonprofit institutions with volunteer
boards of directors. There are several government-run hospitals, two that
are organized through regional hospital administrative districts (Mayo
Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft and Penobscot Valley Hospital in Lincoln)
and one that is municipally owned (Cary Medical Center in Caribou). In 2001, there were 146,000 admissions to Maine's hospitals for inpatient
care and 3.63 million outpatient visits. The towns and cities marked in the map below have hospitals. Please click here for a chart of Maines hospitals arranged by size.
